Deep-Sky Objects
Deep-sky objects are extended objects beyond our solar system. (Occasionally you will hear solar system objects referred to as shallow-sky objects.) âExtendedâ refers to the fact that from our vantage point, the object has length and width rather than appearing as a point of light like a star. Observing deep-sky objects, unlike the sun, moon, and planets, is best done under dark, starry skies. Light pollution from streetlights, billboards, and general urban lighting interferes with deep-sky observing, although a number of objects still can be seen in a light-polluted setting. A light-polluted sky creates a bright background and causes these dim extended objects to fade into the light fog.
Deep-sky objects (DSOs) include star clusters, gaseous nebulae, and galaxies beyond our own Milky Way. Even though they are grouped together as deep-sky objects, each type is quite different in nature, in both composition and appearance.
